How to Choose an Acupressure Pillow

Over the past few years, acupressure pillows (also known as acupressure cushions) have become an increasingly popular device to self-treat a whole series of ailments, ranging from neck pain to tension-type headaches.

What Is Acupressure?

Acupressure (not to be confused with acupuncture) is a non-invasive, healing technique based on the application of physical pressure on specific points along the body. An acupressure pillow allows its users to harness the beneficial properties of acupressure, effectively and inexpensively, in the comfort of their own home. Resting one's head on it for just 25-30 minutes, in fact, boosts peripheral blood and lymph circulation and encourages the body to release endorphins and oxytocin, thereby relieving pain, muscle tension and stress.

It is for this reason that acupressure pillows have become increasingly popular in recent years. Such popularity, however, has led to a huge proliferation of brands and models, which can engender a great deal of confusion. One only has to perform a basic search on the web to be deluged with a multitude of products (some good, some less so) that can all look the same to the untrained eye.

How do you then select an acupressure pillow? How do you separate the wheat from the chaff and ensure you choose only the best ones? Well, in a nutshell, the secret is to look closer and to look inside.

Look Closer

Acupressure pillows are substantially smaller than ordinary bed pillows and are characterized by the "spiky" plastic discs (commonly known as "flowers" or "florets") that cover one its sides. Such discs contain a series of tips whose number should not be lower than 30 or higher than 40. In the former case, acupressure may result too uncomfortable whereas in the latter, it may be too "bland" and, consequently, ineffective. In fact, the ideal number of tips in each disc should range between 31 and 36. Also, such tips should not conjure up esoteric symbols or images, but should simply be pyramid-shaped.

Look Inside

Avoid pillows made of cheap foam rubber, which harms both your neck and the environment. Opt, instead, for pillows made of natural materials such as spelt chaff. Unlike foam rubber, in fact, spelt chaff is breathable, does not allow sweat and dust to accumulate, does not attract mites and is fully recyclable, resulting in minimal environmental impact. More importantly, pillows made of spelt chaff are able to rapidly adjust to the shape of a person's neck, increasing the pressure of the tips on the sore area and making acupressure more uniform and balanced.

Heat Therapy

Many users elect to warm up their acupressure pillow (in a microwave or conventional oven) before using it in order to enjoy the benefits of heat therapy in addition to those of acupressure. Heat therapy (also known as thermotherapy) has long been employed to relieve neck pain as it dilates the blood vessels of the neck muscles, increasing the flow of oxygen and nutrients towards them. Moreover, heat stimulates the sensory receptors in the skin, which decreases the transmission of pain signals to the brain and partially relieves discomfort. Due to its very high content of silicic acid, spelt chaff is ideally suited to heat therapy treatments as, once warmed up, it releases its beneficial heat more slowly and gradually.

By following these simple criteria, you will be able to avoid the many shoddy models that have flooded the market in recent years and select instead only the best acupressure pillows.
